belle nuit

a small collection of oil pastel figures

I chose the name "Belle Nuit" not only for its romantic connotation (and mine and Rodin's shared French heritage), but also as a study of what makes nighttime beautiful. Each piece in this collection represents one aspect of what makes nighttime beautiful, which will be reflective in each work's name.

In this collection you will find a focused interest in light, form and texture. It has been so hard for me to pick a favorite! I have savored every minute of exploring this new medium. I hope you enjoy this collection as much as I do.

La tranquillité, meaning peace, quietness and stillness in French. Evening time is a place for stillness, to rest, to seek God, to believe that one's work for the day was "enough".

pluie du soir | ~11x14"

$350 USD

Pluie du soir, meaning "evening rain" in French. One of the first conversations I remember my husband and I having when we were dating was around the peacefulness of evening rain. There is a sense of comfort and provision when you hear the rain beating against your roof. It is a harmony that sings of God's faithfulness to water the earth and make things grow. A dream of ours is to one day have a house with a tin roof, with one of the reasons to greater enjoy the sound of rainfall.

belle nuit | ~11x14"

$350 USD

Belle nuit, meaning "beautiful night" in French. Nighttime comes with strong emotions and experiences. For some, nighttime is welcomed as a time of rest, reflection, gathering with loved ones. For others, it is a time of deep emotions and wrestling against what one was compartmentalizing during the day. As someone who used to struggle with chronic nightmares, it has been helpful for me to reflect on what makes nighttime beautiful. To me, life seems simpler in the evening. The demands of the day are quieted and I have time to reflect on God's faithfulness. It is a time to rest and look forward to a new day.

nightingale | ~11x14"

$350 USD

The Nightingale is a nocturnal bird. This bird has been an important symbol for poets from a variety of ages, chosen for its creative and seemingly spontaneous song, taking on qualities of the muse. I was inspired by Rodin's torso study of Ariane for this piece, and incorporated spontaneous markings of vibrant hues to evoke the depth and texture of this Rodin piece.

la délivrance | ~11x14"

$350 USD

La délivrance, meaning "deliverance" in French, inspired by Rodin's possibly most famous work, "The Thinker". When I see this piece I cannot help but think of someone who is able to rest at night for the first time after being delivered from a longtime struggle. Emotions of relief, grief, and joy intermixed in a posture of silent meditation and prayer. The darkness has gone, a new day and light is coming. Time to rest.

ressuscitera | ~11x14"

$350 USD

Ressuscitera, meaning "rise again" in French. There is a degree of confidence we have when we go to sleep that we will rise again. This piece represents the person who can put down his/her work for the day and rest, knowing that a new day is ahead. For the person who struggles to do this, let this piece serve as encouragement that tomorrow will come, you will rise again.

créativité | ~5x7"

$150 USD

Créativité, meaning "creativity" in French. This piece is an ode to the nighttime creative (you know who you are). Artistic expression in these quiet hours are soothing and spontaneous. That is actually how this piece was created. It was the first piece I created with my new set of Sennelier oil pastels one evening this past summer at my kitchen table. This piece is not inspired by Rodin (as the rest of this collection), however, it was inspired by Venus de Milo, an ancient Greek statue, that inspired me to use sculpture as my inspiration for the rest of the collection.
